Online games have moved beyond IRC channels and BBS systems. In case they haven't checked a calendar recently, it's 2019, not 1980. Of that 1%, how many are actually interested in multiplayer? And, of those sub-percenters, how many would still prefer an actually functioning simultaneous multiplayer? This "solution" is insulting to fans of the genre. So, PBEM hits like 1% of people who fall out of of those generalizations. So, your players over 50 who are old enough to remember similar game methods of a by-gone era might be interested for nostalgia reasons. Anyone between 20-50 have day jobs and only have to time to play in the evenings - a narrow window of time that may not correspond with an email prompt. I don't know the demographics exactly, but anyone under 20 years old probably has no interest in that kind of slow pace.
